Women’s Mobile Museum
Seeing the world
through a new lens.
Who is art for?
Coming at a time when women are continuing to deeply re-examine the political and economical barriers they face, Women’s Mobile Museum (WMM) was built to be a vehicle for reclaiming space. This vehicle was the collaboration between Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, the South African visual activist Zanele Muholi, and ten Philadelphia artists who identify as women and femmes. From providing their selected artists with tools and know-how to hone their craft, to bringing the historically somewhat inaccessible museum experience to a broader audience, and supporting an international stage, WMM was something to behold.
Starting off our process with a workshop in design, we wanted to be more than hired vendors, we wanted to be active participants. We worked collaboratively with both the curator and team of artists to make this magazine something they could feel ownership over. A book that ultimately was the record of their thoughts, visions, and feelings throughout this year long endeavor, it needed to be a both a backdrop to their work and an active, bold telling of their story.
The future of the
museum experience.
All culminating in an extraordinary last stop to their mobile museum tour, the final exhibition opening was a night full of laughter and tears, hugs and smiles. To see these women, most whom had never been given the chance to share their art with an audience as large of this, stood proudly as we looked on. And, seeing the line that wrapped around the room of people waiting to purchase their magazine, a momento to remember this spectacular night by, our team felt that pride as well.
